Chelles Running Blog

Little Pom who met an Aussie eight years ago and moved over here to be with him. Love Brisbane and all it has to offer, not sure if I would have been as keen about getting up at 5am during the English winter for a run!

the week gone by....

I thought I’d stick with weekly updates until I get back in the swing of things fully….. so here is this weeks.

In a very cheery mood after just surfing over some of the blog entries from Pats group, a few people with injuries have come back recently and it doesn’t appear to have made a lasting negative impact on them, so hopefully the same will apply to me. My original hope was to get back to Pats next week, but I feel that it will be another fortnight probably before that happens, my goal now is to run 10km pain-free (slow as I like!) and I’ll feel comfortable with re-joining, at the moment I would be left for dust and probably end up injuring myself again in the process!

Anyway, stretches are being continued, I think I would make it at least 5 nights a week for a full stretching session and on the nights I don’t have time, I always try and have a quick session in the morning. Over the past week I have managed 3x2km runs comfortably, the latest being this morning. On Thursday I intend to do 4km, reaching my 10km goal before my next physio appointment and taking it up to the level where I felt most discomfort during the recent RiverRun.

So, overall feeling quite positive at the moment, despite the short distance, it’s all been pain free and at a fairly reasonable (sub 5min anyway) pace…..

90/100 & other things....

Well, the results are up for the QLD Run Series, because I did the half at Noosa I didnt qualify for the full series, however for the 5km J2J and 5km RR I did manage to score 90/100, which I was fairly happy with, especially considering my injury run on Sunday of 5min/k for a 5k-er!

The riverrun was a good laugh, I was immediately glad I'd decided to get up and go down there when I started spotting people like Clairie and Jan, whom I havent seen in a month now. At the start of the 5km I caught up with Ciaran, who was also taking it easy after being hit with an achillies injury. Gee, how quickly do you lose fitness though. The km markers were all wrong for the 5km, and I was quite glad really as my stopwatch would have probably laughed at me if it had known how slow I was going! I stuck with Ciaran until about 2.5km, at which point my knee was telling me to hold the pace and go no faster, Ciaran snuck ahead about (coming in about 30seconds ahead in the end) and I carried on towards home. I was suprised by the lack of overtakers considering how slow I was going, perhaps everyone was already ahead of me. Just as I was going on the homeless people bridge someone hit my knee with a hammer. Okay, so noone was actually there, but it felt exactly like that. Gee it hurt something awful!! I managed to get through the final km, it was really good to see MJ on the last bend and Tesso at the finish.
I went home and iced my knee for about an hour and did some serious stretching later on also.

Physio on Monday, the outcome was that I was extremely sore, muscles are very tight but I dont appear to have done anymore damage (just not improved either). Physio kindly strapped up my leg so I can walk and suggested three runs over the next ten days, totalling 10km.

3km tester & physio appointment

As instructed by my phiysio, I got myself in to gear on Sunday morning and went for 3ish km run. I didn't measure it, but I ran slowly for about 14mins, so I reckon 3km would be about right. My knee swelled slightly and was a bit sore, but some RICE and stretching later I was feeling better and it was but a distant memory. Gee, it felt hard though, just those 3km, goes to show how quickly you lose your base... hardly fair considering how long it took me to get it!!

Physio appointment was fairly promising, she seems quite pleased with my progress and I am happy to take it slowly and go with what she says. I'm changing on my opinion about her, I think she just has a very 'blunt' no-mess attitude, which takes a bit of getting use to! My goal for this week is 5km... the question is, do I change my 10km Riverrun entry to 5km and do it there. Is it possible to run under race conditions and not actually race???!

frustrated for sure!!

Well, after an encouraging physio session (ETA back on the running, 2 weeks) I am feeling a bit happier, but gee this lack of exercise isnt good for a gal!! Gone now are the nights where when my head touches the pillow I'm straight to sleep, back is the late night tv watching... I'm tempted to start setting my alarm for 5am even if I dont get up, just to make sure I can do still when the time comes!

The plan was to go out for a 2km run tonight and a 4km run over the weekend, but a guy from the bank is coming around so that won't be possible now, still, maybe in the morning. Its hard though, as soon as I get up the puppy wants a piece of me (usually a leg as well as my attention!) and I feel bad enough leaving him all day, never mind walking straight past him in the morning & he cant come with me yet coz he hasnt had his 12 week shots... ho-hum.

Physio is going to try and sneak me on to one of those machines on Monday, the ones where they wire you all up and then you run and they can really tell where you need to correct to improve... my opinion on her as not dramatically improved but I can feel improvement with the exercises shes been giving me, so I'll stick with it for a further two weeks and go from there!

(still) not running

well, I now feel about as fat as a house and energetic as a koala!! Not done anything since Noosa (other than a 30min recovery run) and dont feel any closer to getting there either. I was feeling quite good until Wednesday, I went to the physio and my usual guy has left to go to another job, he told me his replacement was good, but the jury is out her still, I am due to go again tomorrow and if I dont feel there is any improvement I am considering requesting someone else. Not something I would usually do, but I dont feel there is any point in paying money to someone to help you, if they then dont.

On the brighter side of things, I have bought a puppy, which is the photo. He is to be my companion on those early morning runs when he gets older :)
